In 1847 the French composer Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) set to music a Christmas poem by French poet Placide Cappeau (1808-1877) called Minuit, Chretiens. In 1855 this song was translated by John Sullivan Dwight (1813-1893) into the English form in which it is currently known and loved: O Holy Night. Unfortunately, as Dwight was a Unitarian and an abolitionist, his translation changed much of the French original's content from Gospel to Social Gospel. Here is presented a new translation which is much more in keeping with the French original.
